Socialization
- lifelong process wherein people learn the values, norms and expectations to be integrated in society
- focused on the individual
Enculturation
- process where one becomes part of his/her culture by learning it
- focused on the culture
Acculturation
- process by which one learns/adopts another culture
Norms
unwritten behaviors and rules governing society
Laws - formally written rules
Folkways - norms without moral values
Mores - norms that regulate ethical behavior
Taboo - forbidden acts
Status
- designation individuals occupy
Roles
- behaviors expected of individuals that fit their status in society
Role Conflicg
- possibly of having conflicting statuses and roles
Agents of Socialization
Family - cornerstone of human interaction for any individual, where the first habits and values individual gain and carry throughout life come from
Schools - impart knowledge and skills individuals need to be functioning members of society
Peers - people of a similar age to the individual who are a source of socioemotional support and shape their own preferences
Mass Media - responsible for shaping an individual’s tastes, preferences, beliefs, opinions and practices
Religion - influences the views, values and perspectives of an individual
Goffman’s Dramaturgy
- social interaction is like a theatrical performance
- Backstage: space where thoughts and emotions are freely expressed
- Frontstage : what is visible to your audience/others; their impression of you
Conformity and Deviance
Conformity: behaving by socially accepted conventions in or standards
Deviance: refers to behaviors that violate established norms and values
Types of Deviance
Innovation - use of illegal means
Ritualism - rejection of society’s goals
Retreatism - rejection of society’s goals and means
Rebellion - acts that seek to actively change or replace society’s gols
Human Rights
- universally recognized and fundamentally important for proper conduct of society; inherent and inalieable
- Positive Human Rights: claim against another person or state for good, service or treatment
- Negative Human Rights: restrains persons or governments by limiting their action against the holder of the right
