Module 4 Flashcards
Early/acute side effects
Occur during the course of tx
Occur in tissues with high mitotic rate
Examples: inflammation, skin erythema/dry desquamation, denuding of mucous membrane
Late/chronic
Can occur months or years after tx
May be long term, permanent and irreversible
Occur in tissue with slow mitotic rate
Examples: fibrosis, stenosis, hyperpigmentation, atrophy
Fractionation
Dose/time relationship
Increase dose= risk
Threshold
Severity increase with increase dose result in in clinical effect; below that there may be no effect
Therapeutic ratio
The goal of RT is to destroy cancer cells while maintaining the integrity of normal tissue
Tolerance
That dose which produced is an acceptable probability of treatment complications
Dry desquamation
Shedding of epidermis, basal cell renewal can’t keep up with cell loss
Moist desquamation
Basal cells are destroyed and dermis is exposed
