What socket type is soldered to the motherboard, along with the CPU?

A

BGA

24
Q

Which of the following represents a method for accessing the BIOS setup program?

A

press a key or combination of keys during the BIOS POST

25

What AMD socket uses the Steamroller architecture, providing an integrated graphics controller in the processor?

A

FM2+

26
Q

What are the two different methods for partitioning hard drives?

A

Master Boot Record (MBR)

GUID Partition Table (GPT)

27
Q

What two different passwords can be set to lock down a computer from unauthorized access?

A

supervisor password

user password

28
Q

A Mini PCIe slot can have how many pins?

A

52 pins

54 pins

29
Q

What are two names for the database that holds digital signatures provided by OS manufacturers, such as Microsoft and Red Hat?

A

Key-exchange Key

Key-enrollment Key

30
Q

The Haswell and Broadwell chipsets work with what two different types of RAM?

A

DDR3

DDR4

31
Q

Chipset

A

a set of components on the motherboard that work closely with the processor to control the memory, buses, and peripherals

32
Q

CMOS battery

A

If disconnected, this component causes setup information in the CMOS to be lost.

33
Q

Data bus

A

the system of pathways used for communication which carry data

34
Q

Front Side Bus

A

also called the host bus, this is a 64-bit bus that connects the north bridge to the processor

35
Q

Jumper

A

two small posts or metal pins on the motherboard that are either open or closed

36
Q

Protocol

A

a set of rules and standards that any two entities use for communication

37
Q

Riser Card

A

installs in a PCI slot and provides another slot at a right angle

38
Q

System Clock

A

a device dedicated to timing the activities on the motherboard

39
Q

Virtualization

A

when one physical machine hosts multiple activities that are normally done on multiple machines

40
Q

Wait State

A

issued by a slow device that is not ready to service a request from the processor

41
Q

What is the purpose of the chipset on a motherboard?

A

works closely with the processor to collectively control the memory, buses, and some peripherals. must be compatible with processor it serves.

42
Q

Describe the PCI Express bus and contrast it with previous versions of the PCI bus.

A

PCI Express bus uses a different architectural design than previous buses. PCIe will replace previous versions but will coexist with them for some time. PCI uses parallel bus, PCIe uses serial bus (faster). PCI connects directly to the processor and has four slot sizes.

43
Q

What is a device driver and what is the role of motherboard drivers when you update a motherboard or install a new motherboard?

A

Device driver are small program stored on the hard drive that tell Windows how to communicate with specific hardware device. Motherboard drivers need to be installed in Windows by using CD.

44
Q

What are the many fine lines on the top and bottom of a motherboard’s surface? What is the purpose of these lines?

A

Lines are paths that enable data, instructions, and power to move from component to component on the board. Used for communication and the protocol and methods and are called the bus.

45
Q

What is the design of the Accelerated Hub Architecture?

A

Has fast and slow end, each a separate chip on motherboard. Fast end is North Bridge (graphics and memory) and the slow end is South Bridge (I/O devices).

46
Q

What is the purpose of the CMOS RAM on a motherboard?

A

Stores configuration data. Small amount of memory stored on motherboard used to hold motherboard settings (even when computer is turned off).

47
Q

What is a ZIF socket and what is its purpose?

A

Zero insertion force socket. Protects against ESD and damage from bending by having levers on sides of sockets.

48
Q

Describe the AMD Accelerated Processing Unit (APU).

A

Combo of CPU and GPU in the same processor. GPU is embedded on a video card. Used for desktops with high graphic needs.

49
Q

Describe the LGA2011 processor socket, the CPUs it supports, targeted applications, and any special considerations for its implementation.

A

Sandy Bridge (2nd Gen). Use flip-chip land grid array. Used in high-end gaming and server computers. Requires liquid cooling system.

50
Q

Describe the function of the system clock.

A

Time activities on the motherboard. Sends out continuous electrical signals on one line of system bus, read by other components on motherboard.
