What is an amendment?
A change in the words or meaning of a law or document (such as a constitution)
What does it mean to repeal?
To officially make (a law) no longer valid
What is the Bill of Rights?
A summary of fundamental rights and privileges guaranteed to a people against violation by the state, used especially of the first 10 amendments to the United States Constitution
What does double jeopardy mean?
The act of causing a person to be put on trial two times for the same crime
What is the Due Process?
The official and proper way of doing things in a legal case - the rule that a legal case must be done in a way that protects the rights of all the people involved
What does the word Libel mean?
The act of publishing a false statement that causes people to have a bad opinion of someone
What is naturalization?
To allow (someone who was born in a different country) to become a new citizen
What amendment talks about the right to bear arms?
The second amendment
What does slander mean
The act of making a false spoken statement that causes people to have a bad opinion of someone
What does the first amendment go over?
An amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1791 as part of the Bill of Rights, prohibiting Congress from interfering with freedom of religion, speech, assembly, or petition.
What is a strict construction?
One who believes the U.S. Constitution should be interpreted narrowly and literally
What is a Loose constructionist?
One who believes that the Constitution should be interpreted liberally in order to reflect changing times
What was Washington’s role in the American revolution?
He lead the continental army.
What is Tariff?
Taxes imposed on imported products
Who was John Jay?
One of the authors of the Federalist Papers and in 1789 the first Chief Justice of the United States
