What is an amendment?
A change in the words or meaning of a law or document (such as a constitution)
What does it mean to repeal?
To officially make (a law) no longer valid
What is the Bill of Rights?
A summary of fundamental rights and privileges guaranteed to a people against violation by the state, used especially of the first 10 amendments to the United States Constitution
What does double jeopardy mean?
The act of causing a person to be put on trial two times for the same crime
What is the Due Process?
The official and proper way of doing things in a legal case - the rule that a legal case must be done in a way that protects the rights of all the people involved
What does the word Libel mean?
The act of publishing a false statement that causes people to have a bad opinion of someone
What is naturalization?
To allow (someone who was born in a different country) to become a new citizen
What amendment talks about the right to bear arms?
The second amendment
What does slander mean
The act of making a false spoken statement that causes people to have a bad opinion of someone
What does the first amendment go over?
An amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1791 as part of the Bill of Rights, prohibiting Congress from interfering with freedom of religion, speech, assembly, or petition.
What is a strict construction?
One who believes the U.S. Constitution should be interpreted narrowly and literally
What is a Loose constructionist?
One who believes that the Constitution should be interpreted liberally in order to reflect changing times
What was Washington’s role in the American revolution?
He lead the continental army.
What is Tariff?
Taxes imposed on imported products
Who was John Jay?
One of the authors of the Federalist Papers and in 1789 the first Chief Justice of the United States
What is Capital?
Wealth – one of the three traditional factors of production, the others being land and labor
What is Free market?
The idea that people can decide freely what business they wish to be in and what that business will produce
What is Supply?
In economics, the quantity of a commodity that is in the market and available for purchase or that is available for purchase at a particular price
What is Demand?
In economics, the desire to purchase, coupled with the power to do so OR the quantity of goods that buyers will take at a particular price
What was teh Presidential Succession Act of 1947?
This law placed the Speaker of the House and the President Pro Tempore of the Senate behind the Vice President. The line of succession then extended to the executive department heads in the order in which their agencies were created.
What did the 25th Amendment go over?
The 25th amendment allows for the Vice President to become president in the event of death, resignation, removal from office or impairment that prevents the current president from fulfilling his or her duties.
Who was Alexander Hamilton?
Under George Washington, the first Secretary of the Treasury, who put the new nation on sound financial footing. He was also a strong advocate of a national bank and national currency. Also known as one of the major forces in the creation of the American political party system.
Who was Thomas Jefferson?
The primary author of the Declaration of Independence, the first Secretary of State under George Washington, the second Vice president under John Adams, and the third President of the United States. Also known as one of the major forces in the creation of the American political party system.
Who was Adam Smith?
The Scottish economist who wrote the Wealth of Nations and whose ideas are the basis for capitalism.
