Module 4 Flashcards
Why is the ‘square wheels’ metaphor a good one for discussing change?
It shows a group of people trying to move a cart that has square wheels. The task looks really difficult and time consuming, and the load they are carrying is round wheels that would make the job a lot easier. Sometimes we get busy doing what we’ve always done and actually if we stopped for a moment we might see a better way of doing things right in front of us.
There are four phases to the change curve. Can you name them?
Denial, resistance, acceptance, high performance
In any change there may be gains and losses for an individual that should be taken into consideration. What might these be?
Status and how important they feel to the business.
Autonomy and whether they will be given more responsibility of less / power to make decisions?
How familiar will they be with any change(s) in processes, procedures or environment.
Implications for their expertise and skills – will it mean more challenge or less?
How competent are they going to feel as a result? Will it be difficult or easy to acquire the new skills required or to attain their normal levels of performance?
What will the change(s) mean for their valued relationships with others. Do they have to work with new colleagues, managers, stakeholders?
Do they actually have to change or move to another team and/or company?
Where does resistance come from?
A fear of failure A commitment to the present A fear of the unknown A need for balance in some part of their life Dislike of the pain
