What does UI design refer to?
The visual design, once the layout is defined, tested by users, and vetted by the client.
What does the UI encompass?
UI Design encompasses everything related to graphics, appearance and layout, Including: Layout grid, Images and icons in foreground and background,
Typography, Colours, Layout and design of navigation menus and buttons, and the style guide.
UI Design can be defined from two essential and complementary angles:
1.How to represent information.
2.How to organise information to optimise the interaction between the user of the product
What does UI design combine?
UI design combines aesthetic and functional roles
What is visual hierarchy ?
Visual hierarchy is concerned with arranging design elements to highlight their order of importance to one another
What are the Gesalt Principals?
- Closure
- Symmetry & Order
- Figure/Ground Relationship
- Common Regions
- Proximity
- Continuity
- Common Fate (Synchrony)
- Similarity and Focal Points
What can whitespace acheive?
White space can be used as silence to let information echo or expand, giving it space to assert itself.
What are the 2 color schemes?
- The spectrum of colours - from yellows to purples
- The spectrum of tones - from white, through greys, to black.
What 3 contrasts does the color wheel represent?
- Temperature contrast
- Light and dark contrast
- Complementary contras
What is the 2 typeface rule?
Best practice dictates that a product should have no more than two typefaces: one for titles, subtitles and special quotes; the other for all manner of texts
What elements are apart of the type anatomy?
Baseline, x-height, ascender and descender and serifs
What are the 4 large typeface categories?
- Serif
- Sans Serif
- Display
- Monospace
What is tracking?
Tracking is when we alter at once the space between all the letters of a text (done easily in many software).
Kerning
Kerning is adjusting by hand the space between the letters of a given word. It is used when designing a logotype, signboard, book title or marriage invitation
How is text color generally acheived?
Text colour is generally achieved by increasing or diminishing the “density” of the text.
