Module 4 Flashcards
What colour of flame does copper make?
Blue-green flame
What colour of flame does barium make?
A green flame
What colour of flame does sodium make?
Orange flame
What colour of flame does calcium make?
Orange-red flame
What colour of flame does Potassium make?
Lilac flame
What colour of flame does strontium make?
Red flame
What colour of flame does lithium make?
Red flame
What is the test for carbonates?
Carbonates react with acids to produce CO2 (test by making lime water cloudy)
What is the word equation for when a metal reacts with acid?
metal + acid ➡️ salt + hydrogen
Example: magnesium + hydrochloric acid ➡️ magnesium chloride + hydrogen gas
What is the test for sulfates/ites?
If a precipitate is made using barium chloride
What are halides?
Compounds which contain an element joined to a halogen.
What is the test for halides?
Using silver nitrate to give a precipitate. Chlorides gives white, bromides give “cream” and iodides give “yellow”
What is chromatography used for?
Used to identify and separate chemicals from mixtures
How do you interpret a chromatogram?
You go across from the substances on the side and you see which substances line up and match
What is another test for metals?
We can use sodium hydroxide to various solutions that contain ions.
What colour will an iron ion turn when sodium hydroxide is added?
Green/brown
What colour will copper turn when added to sodium hydroxide?
Blue
What colour will magnesium turn when added to sodium hydroxide?
Cloudy white
What colour will Aluminium turn when added to sodium hydroxide?
Cloudy white
What is an alloy?
It’s a metal mixed with other elements.
