Glucose + Glucose = (U shaped bond)
Maltose
Glucose + Fructose =
Sucrose
Glucose + Galactose =
Lactose
Glucose + Galactose =
Lactose
What size is an oligosaccharide?
3-10 sugar units
What are the effects of insulin?
- Facilitate uptake of glucose from blood into cells
- Stimulate production of glycogen
What happens when the blood glucose levels begin to fall?
Insulin drops, glycogen increases
What does type 1 diabetes mean?
Pancreas cannot release insulin
What does type 1 diabetes mean?
Body tissue resist effect of insulin
What is involved in a glucose tolerance test?
Given glucose drink, take blood over 2-3h and measure blood for glucose
What is the one true effect of eating too much sucrose?
Dental cavies
What is the one true effect of eating too much sucrose?
Dental cavies
What is the difference between milk allergy and lactose intolerance?
Milk allergy is the immune response to protein in milk, intolerance is the inability to create lactase enzymes.
What does soluble vs insoluble fiber do for your colon?
- Soluble: increases fermentation, decreases colon cancer, stimulation of microbial growth, lowers pH
- Insoluble: Decrease fermentation, bulks up your shit, decrease transit time, altered bile acid metabolism
How does soluble fiber lower blood cholesterol?
- Binds dietary cholesterol and bile acids prevents absorption.
