What is maladaptive behaviour?
Behaviour that is destructive to oneself or others
What is a psychological disorder?
A harmful dysfunction in which behaviours are maladaptive, unjustifiable, disturbing and atypical
What is unjustifiable behaviour?
Behaviour that is without rational basis
What is disturbing behaviour?
Behaviour that is trouble some to other people
What is atypical behavior?
Behaviour so difficult that it violates a norm
How were people suffering from disorders initially treated?
Horribly, possessed by demons, tortured and executed
Who established the medical model?
Philippe pinel, is based on 3 concepts
Mental disorders have physical causes that can be diagnosed, treated and in most cases cured
Diagnosed based in symptoms
Similar to a physical illness
What is the bio psycho social model?
An approach that looks at the causes of psychological disorders from multiple perspectives (genetic, psychological and social)
How are labels helpful and how are they harmful?
Harmful- people are discriminated and stigmatized, labels stick
Helpful- help psychologists communicate, understand and treat
What are some risk and protective factors
Risk: academic failures, low birth weight, substance abuse, birth complications
Protective: aerobic exercise , literacy, self esteem, effective parenting
