Levels of prevention

Primary level of prevention
-for whole population to prevent exposure to risk factors
-ex. immunization, exercise, water treatment
Secondary level of prevention
-for those at risk to prevent illness
-ex. smoking cessation, cholesterol management
Tertiary level of prevention
-for those who are ill/injured to prevent disability
-ex. acute treatment, pharmacological and surgical interventions
Quaternary level of prevention
-for those who have a disability to prevent further activity limitations
-ex. rehab, social programs, community resources
What happens when PWD become ill
-they experience a “thinner margin of health” and concequences are potentially greater and may persist after the illness is resolved
Health services utilization
-those with disabilities use 2-3x more health services than those without disabilities
Attitudinal barrier for those with disabilities
-treated people with disabilities is perceived as time, resource and management intensive
Systemic barrier for those with disabilities
-economic liability
-providers can cherry pick patients and exclude those who will be a financial burden
