Common computer protocols must be in agreement and include the following requirements:
- Message encoding
- Message formatting and encapsulation

wat zijn encoding(coderen) en decoding
encoding is een proces waarin informatie wordt omgezet naar een andere acceptabele vorm voor verzending. Met decoding keert het proces om zodat de info interpreteerbaar is
hoe word gezorgd dat een message de juiste grootte is om over het betreffende medum te worden gestuurd
de messages die over het netwerk zijn verstuurd worden omgezet in bits. Daarna worden de bits encoded tot een patroon van licht, geluid of elektrische impulses. de ontvangende end device decode dan de message zodat deze interpreteerbaar is
