Module 3: Prenatal Development Flashcards
Evolutionary Psychology
Focuses on how universal patterns of behavior and cognitive processes have evolved over time
Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection
Process in which organisms change over time so that those genes and behaviors better suited for survival reproduce, and those who can’t survive die off
Allele
A specific version of a gene
Chromosome
A DNA molecule with part of all of the genetic material of an organism
DNA
A helix-shaped molecule made up of nucleotide base pairs
Gamete
A male or female reproductive cell
Genotype
A genetic make up of an individual
Heterozygous
A combination of alleles for a given gene
Homozygous
Having two copies of the same allele for given gene
Phenotype
The individuals inherited physical characteristics
Prenatal Diagnosis
An aspect of prenatal care focused on pursing additional information once a problem has been found
Prenatal Screening
An aspect of prenatal focused on finding problems before birth; noninvasive
Adoption Study
Behavior genetic research method that involves the comparison of adopted children to their adoptive and biological parents
Amniotic Sac
A fluid-filled sac that protects and contains the fetus in the uterus
Behavioral Genetics
The empirical science of how genes and environments combine to generate behavior
