Module 3 - Laboratory Requests Flashcards
Accession department
Also called: central processing, specimen reception, specimen control. Is where all samples are collected.
Unified collection - data processing
Assign accession number, generate collection lists, generate department work lists, enhance time management, decreased costs, laboratory assistants can collect and prepare specimens for testing by the technologists.
Pre-test functions
Generate labels, sort specimens, centrifuge specimens to separate serum/plasma from cells, aliquot (divide up the specimen), deliver to test area
Patient comfort and safety
Fewer specimens and less volume of sample required to coordinate sampling. Decreased interruption to patient routine.
Stored serum
Some institutions save an extra aliquot of serum in the accession area refrigerator for a period of time (7 days.) This sample is then available if repeat or further testing is required without the need to recollect from the patient.
Central inquiry
All inquiries can be routed through the accession department. All samples either will, or have passed through the area, so tracking specimens is facilitated.
Central reporting
Most results are entered into the lab computer system by the technologist completing the test, but in some labs, some results may be entered by trained, reliable individuals in the accessioning department.
Requisition
Is simply the formalization of a request for laboratory analysis to be performed on a patient specimen. Without a requisition it would be impossible to keep track of all requests in an orderly fashion.
Top portion of requisition
Identifies the patient.
Central portion of requisition
Lists tests (by department)
Bottom portion of requisition
Lab use e.g accession number
Master requisition/Long form/Prime form
Lists ALL the tests performed by a laboratory. This type is usually associated with a physician’s office, small hospital or private lab.
Multiple part requisition
Can act as well as a report form. These are found in laboratories that are not computerized.
Departmental requisition
Colour coding of the request forms are often used to easily distinguish between the forms and the departments.
Computer generated requisition
Allows for tests to be entered on a ward or unit. The request is received by the laboratory computer and a requisition is generated in the accession department. Labels and work lists can also be easily generated from the system.
