How is coffee grown
-coffee beans come from the coffee plant

-the conditions need to be protected from direct sunlight and in ample rainfall with warm tropic climate, rich soils
What problems do coffee growers face
-low pay
-high competition as there are millions of small coffee growers
-dangerous work
-seasonal work
-poor health
-mass bombing of herbicides are potential cocaine plants which kill coffee plants
Why do coffee growers remain poor despite the huge value of coffee
-actual coffee beans aren’t worth much
-any company can move from trade with small coffee farmers
-mass amounts of competition and suppliers
-climates make it harder to grow other food
-oversupply causes price drop
-governed by supply and demand
How has fair trade helped
-coffee farmers under fair trade get £1.40 per pound of coffee. Farmers not under fair trade £1 per pound and most doesn’t go to the workers
-helped create unions of coffee farmers that can demand more
-helped build up the community, new schools new play areas of the communities choice.
-sets a minimum price that is higher then average and can’t be brought under it
-secured them a living
-give them machinery
-producers have seen €138m in fair trade premium 2017
-helped 1.66 million farmers
How has fair trade not helped
-price of coffee increases so consumers don’t buy it especially if the economy is low
-once fair trade leave the community it’s not guaranteed that they will received the same treatment and money
-only a few people get fair trade and you have to qualify
-doesn’t stop the poor conditions (like chemicals)
-only 1.66/25 million have been helped
