Module 3: Blood Glucose Monitoring Flashcards
What is the target range of capillary blood glucose test?
4-8 mmol/L
What is the term used to describe a capillary blood sugar reading of <4 mmol/L
Hypoglycemia
What is the term used to describe a capillary blood sugar reading of > 8 mmol/L
Hyperglycemia
What are signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia? (4)
Diaphoresis
Shakiness
confusion
loss of consciousness
What are some signs and symptoms of hyperglycemia? (5)
Polydipsia (thirst increases) Polyuria (urine increases) Polyphagia (appetite increases) Headache Weakness or fatigue
Describe electronic glucose monitor
Portable blood glucose meters, called glucometers, checks blood sugar levels.
Works by analyzing a small amount of blood, usually from the fingertip
Describe the Venous glucose monitor
Provide fast analysis of blood glucose levels and allow management of hypoglycaemic and hyperglycaemic disorders Venous samples (compared to capillary samples) Will produce lower glucose results from many glucose monitors
Describe HbA1C (Glycohemoglobin test)
Is a blood test that checks the amount of sugar (glucose) bound to the hemoglobin in the red blood cells
How do you choose the puncture site for blood glucose monitoring?
Should be vascular. And adults, select lateral side of finger, be sure to avoid central tip of finger, which is more dense nerve supply
