Module 3: Anatomy & physiology of spinal cord, cranial system, ANS, and CNS Flashcards
Sensory/ Afferent Ascending Spinal Tracts
- Dorsal Columns/ Medial lemniscus system (cuneatus/lateral = UL, Gracillis/ medial= LL) = discriminative touch, pressure, vibration
- Anterolateral/ Spinothalamic System = pain/ temp/ non discriminative touch
- Spinocerebellar (LL) / Cuneocerebellar (UL) = non conscious proprioception
Dorsal Columns/ Medial Lemniscus System
- Carries discriminative touch, vibration, pressure & conscious proprioception
- Sensory info enter SC & travel in ipsilateral dorsal column (Gracilis = medial & LL below T6), (Cuneatus = lateral & UL above T6)
- Travel in contralateral medial lemniscus system to VPL of thalamus
- Travel from Thalamus to post central gyrus
Spinocerebellar tract
- Carries non conscious proprioception from LL
- from muscle spindles/ golgi tendon organs
- Travels in fasiculus cuneatus until L3 - then travels in Clarke nucleus L3-C8
- Travels to Ipsilateral cerebellum VIA Inferior cerebellar peduncle
Cuneocerebellar tract
- Carries non conscious proprioception from UL above C8
- Via Inferior cerebellar peduncle to Ipsi Cerebellum
Motor/ Efferent Descending tracts
- Lateral Corticospinal (voluntary Mov’t) (primary motor cortex - frontal)
- Rubrospinal (Voluntary mov’t) (red nucleus)
- Anterior Corticospinal (proximal/ truncal M & postural control - Ipsi) (primary motor cortex - frontal)
- Vestibulospinal (head control relating to eye mov’t/ control) (vestibular nuclei) lateral = extension tone
- Reticulospinal (general M tone & posture, tone of resp muscles) (reticular formation)
- Tectospinal (head control w eye mov’ts) (superior colliculus)
Dural Innervation
The meninges are innervated by
the meningeal branches of the
trigeminal and vagus nerves
CSF Function:
- Cushions the CNS
- Brings nutrition in
- Removes waste
- Maintains homeostasis for CNS
- Transports hormones
If bub has heightened Gag reflex?
- Need more cortical development to inhibit.
How does sutural work influence the NS?
Influences vagal complex via trigeminocervical nucleus.
- has parasympathetic effect
Which suture release is important homecare if having dental work done/ palate expansion/ braces etc
occipitomastoid
Occipital Condyle Imbalance may cause;
Brainstem wind–up
* Irritability
* Unsettledness
* Digestive disturbances
* Difficulty attaching to the breast, particularly
one side - often the mother has assumed it
is a problem with that breast
Sucking reflex involves which cranial Nerves?
CN V, VII, IX, X, XII
Function of Vestibular system?
assesses self-motion to quickly adjust eyes and other body parts for balance control
** Balance control requires integration of visual, proprioceptive as well as motor-related sensory cues.
* vestibular nuclei in BS
Most Important Executive Function:
Attention Regulation - As prerequisite for other executive functions like decision making, memory ,
Five steps to self regulation
Recognize stressor
reduce stressor
Reflect ; enhance stress awareness
Reframe behaviour
Restore Energy
