Module 3 Flashcards
Pressure Machines
Devices used for arterial injection of embalming chemicals. Devices include: gravity, bulb syringe, combination gravity/bulb, hand pump, air pressure, and centrifugal pump (modern embalming machine)
Hydroaspirator
Apparatus that is connected to the water supply. When the water is turned on, suction is developed and is used to aspirate the contents of the body’s cavities.
Electric Aspirator
Device that uses a motor to create a suction for the purpose of aspiration.
Gravity Injector
Apparatus used to inject arterial fluid during the vascular (arterial) phase of the embalming process. Relies on gravity to create the pressure required to deliver the fluid (0.43 pounds of pressure per 1 foot of elevation)
Hand Pump
Historical instrument resembling a large hypodermic syringe attached to a bottle apparatus. Used to create either pressure for injection or vacuum for aspiration.
Bulb Syringe
Self-contained, soft rubber manual pump designed to create pressure to deliver fluid as it passes through one-way valves located within the bulb. It is used only to deliver fluids; it cannot be used for aspiration.
Electric spatula
Electrically heated blade that may be used to dry moist tissue, reduce swollen tissue, and restore contour.
Body Lifts
A mechanical device used to raise the deceased from the removal cot to the embalming table to the dressing table then to the casket. Reduces muscle strain and potential for injury when moving human remains throughout the mortuary process.
Sterilizers
Oven or appliance for sterilizing. An autoclave that sterilizes by steam under pressure at temperatures greater than 100 degrees Celcius.
Positioning Devices
Preparation room equipment for properly positioning bodies before, during, and after vascular embalming.
Embalming Tables
A moveable platform of porcelain, stainless steel, or stain resistant fiberglass with drain channels and a drain hole at the foot end, used for embalming human remains.
Dressing Tables
A wheeled, moveable platform of laminated plastic with an aluminum frame used for dressing and cosmetizing embalmed or unembalmed remains.
Refrigeration
A method used to delay decomposition and slow postmortem changes in the deceased body. Ideal temperatures range from 35-45 degrees F.
Sharps Container
A plastic, puncture-proof container used for disposal of needles, scalpel blades, or other sharp instruments.
Arterial Tubes
Various-sized stainless steel tubes used for injecting arterial fluid during embalming
Needle Injector
A gun-like instrument used to insert a “barb” into the mandible and maxilla to hold the lower jaw in a closed position.
Scalpel
A sharp cutting instrument used to make incisions.
Aneurysm Hook
A sharp-pointed instrument used for tissue dissection
Aneurysm Needle
A blunt instrument used for tissue dissection and passing ligatures around vessels.
Bistoury Knife
A curved cutting instrument that cuts from the inside out.
