Module 3 Flashcards
What are the main determinants of health? (4)
Personal (traits, behaviours, beliefs)
Social
Economic
Physical Environment factors (health)
Most determinant of health are controllable or uncontrollable?
Largely Uncontrollable
-play a big role in impacting individuals health
Social Determinants of health are;
Interconnected, non medical factors that influence individuals and populations health
3 Factors of Social Determinants of Health:
Social
Economic
Physical environment
-all fall under the broader determinants of health
Social Determinants of Health
Conditions in the social and physical environments in which we are born, grow, live, learn, and age in
-affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality of life outcomes
Risk Factors:
Negative social determinant
-impact physical opportunities
Protective factors
Positive social deteminants
Negative or Positive factor of Social Determinants
-high crime neighborhoods have lower physical activity rates (negative)
-low crime neighborhoods have higher activity rates (protective)
Social Determinants can Exist at Multiple Levels
-individual (employment status, education, etc)
-local community (neighbourhood safety)
-societal (employment rate, accessible education)
Social Determinants Can add up/ be Cumulative
-this goes with that for most
—disadvantaged/ underprivileged
-advantaged/ privileged
3 Properties of Social Determinants
- Can be Negative or Positive
- Can exist at multiple levels
- Can add up to be cumulative
Settings in Social Determinants:
-where we live, work, healthcare, etc
-understand how health and physical activity opportunities are impacted by the settings
What are Social Determinants of Physical Activity
Factors in social and physical environments
-in which we are born, grow, live, learn, work, and age
General Examples of Social Determinants
-access to job opportunities
-availability of community based opportunities to be active
-social support
-social norms and attitudes
-socioeconomic conditions
-exposure to crime
-access to mass media
General Examples of Physical Determinants
-natural environments
-built environment
-worksite, school, community recreation settings
-community design
What is Social Inequality
The unequal distribution of and unequal access to valued resources, rewards, and positions in society
High social class PA Resources:
7 possible resources
25% of them being pay facilities
Low social class PA Resources
City planning favours areas of
High social class
-provide more free PA sources
-except these people need free resources the least, but rate provided with the most
Social Stratification
system of social inequality that’s embedded in society
-those in the highest level get the most resources and opportunities
-those in lowest level get least opportunities
Social Inequality
People in a society have unequal access to valued resources, opportunities, and positions in power
Dominant Ideology
Everyone has an equal opportunity to be successful in life
-equality of opportunity (same start line)
Dominant Ideology frames how most people think about;
politics, economics, science, PA
-influences their behaviour
If true equality of opportunities exist;
-no one is negatively impacted or discriminated against
-people have same access to resources and opportunities
-equal access to education, and elimination of discrimination
Meritocracy
-not true/ myth
People advance/ rewarded in life based only on their merits
-this is fair since we all have the same chance of succeeding in life (equal opportunity)
Equality of Condition
Everyone in society has similar actual levels of life’s outcomes (wealth, societal status, power)
-doesn’t exist
What marks out the privileged from the unprivileged
Social Determinants
Results of Meritocracy on society
-PA interventions mainly target individuals
-small subset of population- drop outs
-will not impact society PA levels
Social Determinants result in more resources/ opportunities for:
Privileged and non- marginalized people
Upstream
Change environment or public policy/ law
-changes a lot for a lot of people
Midstream
Community based interventions
-affects a good amount of a decent amount of people
Downstream
Individual personal training
-affects a bit of one or two people
