Module 3 Flashcards
Amino Acid General
20 Different amino acids
Whats so special about Glycine?
For all amino acids except glycine the alpha carbon is attached to 4 different groups
Stereoisomers
Mirrored images of eachother
Non-Polar Amino Acids
Hydrophobic buried in the core of a protein
Aromatics
Ring groups associated with its side chain
Phosphorylation
Kinases add phosphoryl groups
Phosphatases remove phosphoryl groups
Disulfide Bonds
from through the oxidation of SH groups of 2 cysteine residues forming a covalent linkage
Amino Acid Positively Charged
Lysine and Arginine are +1 charge
this can serve as a proton donor or acceptor
Amino Acid Negatively Charged
Aspartate and Glutamate carry a -1 charge
Amino Acid diprotic
Can donate or accept 2 protons
