Core to the profession and guides a nurses behavior, we can determine our best course of action.
What is the code of ethics for nursing?
The nine provisions and interpretive statements that guide the ethical framework for registered nurses practice across all roles, levels, and settings.
Integrity?
acting consistently with our values.
Obligation?
duty to take care of each other and another person in a non discriminatory manner.
Distress or fatigue?
Problems and threats.
Courage?
Overcome fear and consequences (advocating)
Resilience?
We build this by showing courage.
Altruism?
Concern for welfare and well being of others
Autonomy
Right to self governance or self determination
Human dignity?
Inherent worth of each individual
Integrity
Acting in accepted code of ethics
Social justice
accordance in fair treatment for all.
What are ethical principles?
Basic moral truths that guide the persons actions.
Paternalism?
Controlling another persons choices. Withholding information that will upset the patient.
Beneficence
Actions should always promote good - basic obligation to assist others.
Nonmaleficence
DO NO HARM!
Justice
Provide fair, equitable, appropriate treatment to all, without prejudice.
Fidelity
Faithful and loyal, keeping promises.
Veracity
Telling the truth
Privacy and confidentiality
Essential to maintaining a trusting relationship. HIPPA!
Ethical dilemma
Causes moral distress - there is no clear cut answer.
What are some ethical issues in nursing?
Conscientious objection, incivility, bullying, end of life, euthanasia, questionable practices, impaired practice
Scope
activities one is permitted to preform within the profession
Standard
legal term, the benchmark of minimum care that should be preformed.
