Abrupt withdrawal
Can lead to seizures
Symptomstic treatment
Acetaminophen, vitamins, medicine for discomfort
Treatment approaches
Fixed schedule dosing benzodiazepines (ativan)
Symptom triggered approach having withdrawal related seizures
Phenytonin (Dilantin)
Meds to cause illness when drinking (vomiting)
Disulfiram lofopran (anabuse)
Assessment of alcoholism
Crisis assessment- used for rapid and consistent communication used if crisis threatens saftey
Multi system effects of alcoholism
Liver- hepatitis and cirrhois
Respiratory- pneumonia
Cns- seizires, alcohol dementia
Clinical manifestations of mild withdrawals
Anxiety, irritability
Begins 6-24 hours after last drink
Alcohol withdrawal delirium (Dt)
Occurs on day 2 and 3
May appear as late as 14 days from last drink
Death can result from cardiovascular collapse or hyperthermia
