Module 21 - Injury Flashcards
The 3 E’s of injury prevention
- Education
- Enforcement
- Engineering
Education
information & skills
ex. Encouraging you to have a designated driver –> Public education
Enforcement
Laws, policy
Ex. - Speed limit laws
- Drunk driving laws
Engineering
Making things safer (regulations, standards)
- Ex. Engineer cars to make people safer
- Ex. Engineer roads and highways systems to be safter
Primary prevention (before the event)
prevent the event that is causing the injury
- i.e. motor vehicle injuries, you want to prevent the crash
○ Ex. Rumple strips; lighting the roads;
○ Ex. Speed bumps; Laws to reduce speeds in areas (I.e. school zones)
Secondary prevention (during the event)
Trying to mitigate the injury
- Ex. The crash has happened, but we are trying to prevent death and protect the person
○ Seat belt, airbags, design and engineering (crumple zone) to absorb the impact and protect the person
Tertiary
treatment (after the event)
Workplace injury prevention
- elimination of the hazard (most effective)
- admin controls to reduce workers’s exposure to the hazard
- PPE for workers (least)
T/F: At the workplace, injuries are rarely true accidents
T
The art and science of health equity research
Art: thinking outside the box, asking questions in creative ways, what is missing?
Science: apply sophisticated data to deep social problems & some up with an actionable answer (or more questions)
