Diphthongs
A gliding vowel in the articulation of which there is a continuious transition from one position to another
Monophthong
A vowel sound which the tongue stays in one position
Unrounded
Pronounced without rounding the lips, or decreased lip rounding
Vowel frontness
The horizontal position of the tongue in the mouth when pronouncing a vowel
Vowel Height
A vertical position of the tongue or jaw relative to the roof of the mouth or jaw aperture
Glottis
The space between the vocal folds in the larynx, or voice box, that’s responsible for generating voice tone
Nasals
A consonant that is produced when the velum is lowwered and the oral cavity is closed, allowing air to escape through the nose
Affricates
A consonant sound that begins as a stop and concludes with a fricative
Glides
a sound that is similar to a vowel but functions as a syllable boundary instead of being the nucleus of a syllable
Fricatives
A consonant sound that is created by forcing air through a narrow passage in the mouth, which causes the air to flow turbulently and create a hissing sound
Plosives
A plumonic consonant in which the vocal tract is blocked so that all airflow ceases
Manner of Articulation
The way speech sounds are produced by the interaction of the vocal tract’s articulators, such as the tongue, lips, and palate
Palatal
A consonant sound produced by raising the blade, or front, of the tongue toward or against the hard palate just behind the alveolar ridge
Velar
A consonant sound produced by touching or approaching the soft palate with the back of the tongue
Labio-Dentals
A sound made with the lips and teeth also known as place of articulation
