What is the meaning of religion?
A system of beliefs and practices that guides how people live.
What does religion offer?
Religion offers particular insights and understandings about life. These find expression in a variety of religious beliefs, teachings and practices.
What are the religions of the world?
Gatherings of people who share common beliefs about their experiences of a God or gods.
What does it mean to be religious?
Being religious requires an understanding of a particular religion and a willingness to consider a range of different ‘measures of religiosity’.
What are some indicators of being religious?
- What/how frequently does a person practice elements of a religious way of life?
- What a person says they believe in and how their behaviour matches the beliefs of that religion
- Religious participation, adherence, observance, practice and identity.
What are the main characteristics of a religion?
Religious, belief, teaching, writings, rituals, practice, celebrations, leaders, laws and sacred places.
Provide an example of someone who is religious
Mendel, a boy from Oprah Winfrey’s series ‘Belief - The Seeker’.
How does Mendel relate to the concept of religion and religiosity?
Mendel believes in the religion of Judaism. He shows religiosity through his obvious love for Judaism, participating in celebrations and rituals like his ‘Bar Mitzvah’.
