Module 2, Lesson 6 Flashcards
What are “surroundings” called?
Environment
Are living things connected and affect each other in many ways?
YES
What puts limits on life? Example: temperate, rainfall, soil conditions limits where plants and animals can live.
Environment
A group of plants and animals that depend on each other and the environment in which they live for survival.
Ecosystem
Another word for environment and ecosystem but larger than ecosystem
Biome
What are 2 examples of change that affect the whole system?
1 - Lack of rain
2 - Animal dies
The place where a plant of animal lives
Habitat
What word means to “die out”?
Extinct
What causes extinction?
Hunting, cutting down trees, etc.
Can laws help protect the environment?
YES
What are the basis for all food that animals eat?
Plants
What helps determine what plants will grow?
Grow
Decayed plant or animal matter; helps make soil fertile
Humus
Name 2 ways soil can lose fetility.
1 - erosion from wind or water
2 - desertification (spread of desert like conditions)
A place where living things depend on each other and the environment for survival (examples: river, meadow)
Ecosystem
How do people and nature change the ecosystem?
Through small changes that affect the system, such as drought or clearing land
Can plants and animals live anywhere?
NO - they adapt to specific environments
How is a biome different from an ecosystem?
An ecosystem can be as small as a garden or a pond; a biome is much larger and may contain several ecosystems.
What causes desertification?
Erosion or planting the same crops over and over again (the soil can no longer support plant life)
Why do geographers and scientists study soils?
To determine which plants can grow, and plants are the basis for all animal food.
