What are cognates?
A
Cognates are words that have the same origin as a word from a different language.
They usually have similarities in spelling, pronunciation, and meaning.

What are false cognates?
A
False cognates (sometimes known as false friends) are two words in different languages that appear to be cognates (they look and sound similar), but they differ in meaning.
Examples: French
Bra - Bras (arm)
Jolly - Jolie (pretty)
Library - Librarie (bookshop)
Coin - Coin (corner)
Examples: Spanish
stretch - Estrecher (to make narrow)
juice - Juicio (judge)
Library - Libreria (bookshop)
Embarrassed - Embarazada (pregnant)
Sensitive - Sensato (sensible)
