Teaching Principles
Word stress: where do you put the correct word stress?
Spelling: can they spell it correctly?
Word class: grammatical grouping.
Antonym: opposites of a word.
Collocations: how words go together.
Homographs: spelled the same, different pronunciation and meaning (tear)
Homonyms: same spelling or pronunciation, different meaning (bat)
Homophones: same pronunciation, but different spelling or meaning (new/knew, flower/flour)
Prefix: adding something to beginning of word that changes it.
Suffix: adding something to end of word that changes it.

What is concept checking?
Checking the understanding of the new words in terms of function and meaning.
Name 3 ways you can perform a concept check.
Use simple language.
Yes/no questions, either/or questions and simple “wh” questions are particularly effective.
Don’t use the new (target) language in your questions.
Use as many questions as possible to check various aspects of the language.
How do you consolidate language?
Revise and recycle.
Through games or homework.
