What is a collocation?
Group of words that often go together or work together.
Verb-noun collocations are especially tricky for students.
Example: “take a cup of coffee” instead of “have a cup of coffee”.
Name 2 types of collocations with examples.
They can be fixed, where it is difficult to replace one of the words with an alternative, or freer, allowing for more choice of words.
Fixed: “Utter disaster”. There are few words that can be used instead of “disaster”. ‘
Freer Collocation: “Make a cake”. There are many words that can be used instead of “cake”.
What is a lexical set?
A lexical set (sometimes described as a “word family”) is a group of words that have the same form, topic, or function.
Sport: ball, field, hoop, trainers, sweater, rugby
Animals: horse, cat, dog, mouse
Verb: play, sing, write
Name 4 ways word association can improve a student’s vocabulary.
It can help learners to remember vocabulary related to a theme.
It can be used to introduce a topic or lesson and to see what your students already know.
It is good for any level of learners as well as any age.
It can be used to pick up the pace in a lesson, for revision, as a warmer, filler or at the end of a lesson.
What is scale?
AKA cline.
Scale is a visual representation to show differences in meaning between words that are similar.
They go from one extreme to another, for example, from positive to negative, or from weak to strong.
Example: small, big, large, huge, gigantic
