How do different pacific islands share beliefs and values?
Pacific cultures share a certain number of values which are common to many islands, links them to their created (Maui, God etc.)
Values may vary between islands and it is important to understand differences in the cultural groups
What are the pacific values?
These are respect (for elders, people in authority), service (obligation of care between individuals and groups), collectivism (reflects the way we see the world), family (brings identity and belonging) and spirituality (cornerstone of traditional values and cultures)
Māori models of health
Māori have a higher health need than the NZ population in general, additionally Māori are a minority population in NZ and they’re underrepresented among health professions resulting in many Māori people have to see non-Māori health professionals in their life
How is spiritual health different from religion?
Spiritual health (wairua) in Māori goes a lot further than church and religion - connection to spirits, environment, land, ancestors etc.
Southern cross/Te Pae Māhutonga
Important navigational marker but also promotes health
Four stars of the cross represent goals for Māori health - access, protection of environment, healthy lifestyle and social participation
Two pointers of the cross represent what are required to be able to reach the four goals - leadership and autonomy

Rangatiratanga - authority, leader, cheif
Tino - main/important
Ability to make decisions about important things by Māori for Māori

Each develop own plan - 3 year plan determines services provided
Iwi-Māori partnership bonds
Represent local Māori perspectives
