Module 2- Body Fluids Flashcards
1
Q
fluids bathe our cells to maintain homeostasis. true or false?
A
true. when we drink fluid it goes thru a path: a) digestive system b) circulatory system c) cells d) lymphatic system e) circulatory system
2
Q
what are the 2 major body fluid compartments?
A
1) INTRAcellular fluid (ICF) –> inside all cells, 70% of body fluids
2) EXTRAcellular fluid (ECF) –> outside cells, makes up internal enviro of body, 2 components:
a) interstitial fluid–> directly outside cells to bathe them
b) plasma–> watery part of blood
3
Q
what is the average total body water amount and distribution?
A
average TBW is 42 litres.
- ICF is around 67%
- interstitial is 26%
- plasma is 6%
4
Q
what is plasma made of?
A
- 92% water
- 8% other substances–> proteins, ions, nutrients, waste, etc
- it is a COLLOIDAL solution–> plasma proteins are SUSPENDED in the fluid
5
Q
SALTY CHOCOLATE BANANA
A
to remember % distribution of cell ions inside/outside:
salt on outside–> NA and CL
chocolate on outside–> CA
banana on inside–> K
