Module 2 Flashcards
Decribe strategic considerations of project planning
- firms have expertise in specific env areas
- if opportunities arise in other areas the firm must decide if it can/wants to develop expertise
- it may be beneficial for firm to focus on areas where they have expertise
- it may be beneficial for a firm to take project where it doesn’t have expertise to develop it
Explain profit considerations in project planning
- assessing if a strategic project is likely to make profit for firm
- based on similar projects
- sometimes take project that won’t likely make profit to gain expertise
- early stage of planning
Describe project planning
- planning changed through project
- incorporates project definition and planning
- identify stakeholders
- deliverables
- plan execution of project
What planning is involved in project definition
- identify stakeholders
- set objectives
- define scope
- define project deliverables
- define project constraints
- define project risks
What is the result of the project definition phase of project planning
A project definition document which provides a written account describes exactly what the project is intended to accomplish
-project can be agreed and approved by stakeholders
What is a stakeholder
- person or organization that is actively involved in the project or whose interests may be + or - affected by execution or completion of the project
- may exert influence over project or deliverables
What are the main stakeholder groups in env projects
-gov
-regulators
-public
-the proponent
-
Explain the government as a stake holder in the fuel co example
The gov has a responsibility to protect public interest.
- source of information about best practice
- set regulation
They are also a stakeholder because if the guidelines change for hydrocarbon contaminated sites over the course of the project it could impact the project
Explain the public as a stakeholder in the fuel co example
A number of the public could be very impacted by the project.
- gw could become contaminated
- often motivated by their interest in their health
- they usually want all contamination removed
- pm should creat strategies for dealing with public interest-group
Explain fuel co (Robert and June) as a stakeholder in the fuel co example
- motivated to find the site free of contamination
- pm much understand their motivation since they can influence the project heavily as the client
Explain the env consulting company as a stakeholder in the fuel co example
-motivation is to produce a defensible report
-and to earn profit
-
What are the 5 components of effective(smart) objectives?
- specific
- measurable
- aligned
- realistic
- time limited
What is the purpose of objectives?
To define, document. And clarify the purpose of the project for all stakeholders (including pm and project team)
What does s mean in the smart acronym
Specific
- identify exactly what will be completed and delivered by the project
- when those activities will be completed
- where they will be completed
- how they will be
- who will complete it
What does m mean in the smart acronym
Measurable
- specific details against which actual events can be measured
- measuring is the only way to determine whether the project has achieved its objectives and the pm has done a good job
What does A stand for in the smart objective
Aligned
-projects should support other strategies or directions of the organization
What does the R stand for in the smart objective acronym
Realistic
-objectives can be realistically achieved from a technical, schedule and budgetary perspective
What does t mean in the smart objective acronym
Time limited
- when the project is expected to be completed
- allows stakeholders to focus and schedule their activities
Describe the project deliverables
A unique product, service, or result that is produced by the project
-agreed upon during planning phase
Define project constraints
Project limitations or restrictions
- Maybe internal to the project or related to events, activities or conditions external to the project
- I.e. weather, wildlife migrations or availability of qualified staff
Define project risks
How could you identify them?
Probability that an adverse event may occurs
- I.e. weather delaying project, changes in regs, safety issues or public discontent
- risk management matrix
Explain public good
When a person cannot be restricted from using a good and when one person uses the good, the use does not reduce the availability of the good for another persons use
Why has the public become suspect of the govs ability to protect the env
High profile cases such as Chernobyl have lead to public concerns about ability of gov to balance interests of public and industry
-result is now govs have to allow public individuals and groups to be involved in decisions about env
What are two factors to be considered when determining whether or not to create a plan to manage for a particular risk
Severity and probability
