Activities of Daily Living
Activities involved in taking care of one’s own body, including such things as dressing, bathing, grooming, eating, feeding, personal device care, toiling, sexual activity, and sleep/rest
Early Intervention
A system of coordinated services that promotes the child’s age-appropriate growth and development and supports families during the critical early years
Fine Motor
Small movements, such as picking up a pencil or holding a spoon
Younger Adulthood
The ages between 20 and 40 years
Reflexes
An action that is performed as a response to a stimulus and without conscious thought
Self Identity
The recognition of one’s potential and qualities as an individual, especially in relation to social context
Family-Centered Care
Care that involves working with the family members of the child on goals that are considered important to them
Learned Helplessness
The phenomenon of less activity and independence in functioning among elderly people that results when older persons are not allowed to engage in activities or when others do everything for them
Cognitive
The mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses
Empty Nest Syndrome
Sadness or emotional distress affecting parents whose children have grown up and left home
Oral Motor
Relating to the muscles of the mouth and/or mouth movements
Sandwich Generation
A generation of people, typically in their thirties or forties, responsible for bringing up their own children and for the care of their aging parents
Social Language
Everyday communication in oral and written forms
Childhood
Spans early childhood (1-6) and later childhood (6-12)
Middle Adulthood
(I think…total guess) The period of development for ages 40-65
