Module 2 Flashcards
What does cholesterol do for the plasma membrane
Stabilizes the membrane and increases rigidity
What are 3 parts of the plasma membrane
Cholesterol
Proteins
Carbohydrates
What is the cytoplasm
Material found between plasma membrane and nucleus. “The streets”
*made of cytoplasm (jelly substance within the cell) and organelle the structures of buildings of the cell
What are the non membranous organelles
Cilia
Cytoskeleton
Centrioles
Ribosomes
What is a centriole
Cylinder structure that helps organize spindle fibers during cell division
What are the membranous organelles
Endoplasmic reticulum
Golgi apparatus
Lysosomes
Mitochondria
What is the endoplasmic reticulum?
System of channels that help transport, make and store materials (proteins and lipids)
What is the Golgi apparatus?
Modifies, sorts, and packages items for the cell
What is the mitochondria?
Produces ATP (cell energy)
What are the complimentary base paring for DNA?
Adeline with Thymine (a-t)
Apple truck
Guanine with Cytosine (g-c)
Car garage
What are the complimentary base pairing for RNA
Adenine with uracil (a-u)
Guanine with Cytosine (c-g)
What is chromatin?
Fine filaments of packaged DNA
- found in non dividing cells
Easy to get to to. Your closet
What are chromosomes ?
Super coils of chromatin of DNA.
Extra chromie homie. Hard to get to think of clothes in your suitcase
What are the 3 components of the phospholipid bilayer
Cholesterol
Proteins
Carbohydrates
What is the cytoskeleton?
Network of fibers that provide structural support and helping cell movement
(Think of our skeleton)
What are ribosomes?
Site of where the proteins chains are made they can be free floating in cytoplasm or attached to the rough ER
What is the endoplasmic reticulum (er)?
Rough er: studded with ribosomes involved in making of proteins
Smooth er: lacks ribosomes and makes lipids
What is the Golgi apparatus?
Modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids for transport.
What is the lysosomes?
Contain digestive enzymes to break down waste materials and cellular debris
What is the nucleus?
Controls center on the cell, where all dna is stored
What is the mitochondria?
The powerhouse of the cell, where atp is made
Nucleotides are made up of what?
Contains a phosphate group, a five-carbon sugar, and a nitrogenous base.
What are the inner folds of the mitochondria called?
Cristae
What structure allows materials to enter and exit the nucleus?
Nuclear pores
Which nitrogenous base is only found in RNA?
Uracil
Which organelle is ribosome free and helps with making of lipids?
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum.
What is the structure of the cell membrane primarily composed of?
A double layer of phospholipids
Which organelle is responsible for protein synthesis
Ribosome
What is DNA made out of?
Nucleotides
Which organelle is the powerhouse of the cell?
Mitochondria
Which nitrogenous base is only found in RNA?
Uracil
What structure allows molecules to enter and exit the nucleus
Nuclear pores and nuclear envelope
What are the nitrogenous bases
Adenine
Thymine
Cystocine
Guanine
