What are some safety tips for the home care nurse?
- Ensure the agency has an itinerary of your route and stops
- Be organized
- Have a full tank of gas and GPS
- Call ahead to ensure the family is aware you are on your way; provide an ETA
- Be streetwise
- Be aware of what to expect in the home. If you are visiting a 20-year-old new mother who reportedly lives alone and you find a 50-year-old male, ask for the client by name and wait for her presence before entering the home. Use your gut to determine if it is a good idea to proceed.
- If at any point in time you feel uncomfortable you can terminate the visit; remove yourself from the home as soon as it is safe
how to prevent falls in the home?
- Make an appointment with your health care provider (Review meds, any recent falls, or health concerns)
- Keep moving
- Wear sensible shoes
- Remove home hazards (Remove boxes, cords; secure loose rugs; store necessities within reach; immediate clean spills; use nonslip mats)
- Light up living space
- Use assistive devices (Handrails, nonslip tread, raised toilet, grab bars, sturdy seat)
