What should not be done to wooden propellers to prevent rot?
They should not be wrapped.
What is the ideal storage temperature for wooden propellers?
Between 10°C (50°F) and 20°C (68°F).
What should be done to metal fixed propellers that is not done to wooded one?
Regular corrosion inspections.
What must be done to variable pitch propeller prior to shut down and storage?
The pitch change mechanisms need to be exercised to circulate the oil.
If a variable pitch propeller is to be stored on the wing for periods in excess of 3 months what must be done?
The pitch change mechanism must be flushed.
What is used to flush the pitch change mechanism?
An inhibiting oil.
What can metal propellers be covered with?
Waxed paper.
What are the external parts of metal propellers treated with?
Lanolin
What must the Lanolin not come into contact with?
De-icer boots.
If a wooden propeller has an automatic pitch change mechanism what must be done?
The hub must be filled with oil.
What position must metal propellers be stored in?
Upright (vertical) position.
If propeller blades have preloaded bearings, what should be done after 6 months?
The blades must be rotated to prevent the bearings from brinelling.
What must be done to propeller blades with preloaded bearings after 12 months?
The bearings must be removed and visually examined for signs of ‘brinelling’ and corrosion.
When does the propeller need re-inhibiting?
After each 12 month period.
When does the propeller need an overhaul?
After 3 years.
When would the propeller not need re-inhibiting after 12 months?
If the propeller is dismantled and remains in its original manufacturers’ packaging.
When do pre-loaded bearing need exercising?
After 6 and 9 months.
What must all propeller parts be packed in if un-installed?
An approved crate.
