Module 17 Flashcards
Ectopic teeth
teeth erupting or moving in wrong direction; often a consequence of an underdeveloped, crowded maxillary/mandibular arch.
diastema
space in between teeth
open bite
can be anterior or lateral. Teeth don’t overlap or touch.
over jet
protrusive premaxilla with or without Angle Class II malocclusion (upper tooth way over the bottom tooth)
crossbite
the lower molar outside of the upper molar.
*Missing teeth tend to be where the cleft is or was.
Macroglossia
Abnormally large tongue
Microglossia
- Tongue is resting between the lower teeth—it is abnormally small.
- Causes lack of development of the jaw (the mandible)
- This affects the development of the mandibular arch.
- Tongue usually helps spread the mandibular arch out but if the tongue is small the teeth move in.
Ankyloglossia
- “tongue tied”
* fermium can be: too short; attached too far anteriorly; attached too broadly on inferior surfaces; combinations.
When examining the hard palate look for:
- abnormal height (high or low)
- submucous cleft palate
- fistulas: some type of hole or inadequacy of tissue.
T/F Fistulas occur in the hard palate
F, Fistulas can occur in the hard and soft palate
Adequate movement to achieve vp closure can be detected intra-orally
False, requires instrumental evaluation
T/F Enlarged palatine tonsils do not usually interfere with velopharyngeal closure
True, unless they expand superiorly into the velopharyngeal port.
