Module 1.3 - Acids, Bases and their reactions Flashcards
what is an acid
substance that releases hydrogen ions in aqueous solution
what are the 6 properties of acids
- corrosive
- sour taste
- turn blue litmus paper red
- react with some metals
- conduct electricty
- neutralised by bases
what are acids made of
acids are molecular compounds made up of different types of elements
What determines the strength of an acid
if tehre is lots of hydrogen ions it is strong if their is little it is weak
what is an base
substance that releases hydroxide ions
what are the 6 properties of bases
- caustic
- soapy/slimy feel
- turn red litmus paper blue
- bitter taste
- conduct electricty
- neutralised by acids producing salt and water
What determines the strength of a base
strong bases have lots of hydroxide ions and weak have little
what are alkalis
bases that are able to be dissolved in water
what does the pH scale measure
the hydrogen ion concentration in solution is measured
what range of pH is measured
1 - 14
How is an indicator used
an indicator is ued by comparing the colour of the indicator to the pH scale
What is neutrlization
acids react with bases to form a salt and water solution
