Module 1.1 - The Law of Conservation Flashcards
What is the law of conservation
matter is not created nor destroyed
what are reactants and where are they located in an equation
reactants are teh old substances going into teh equation, on the left
what are products and where are they located in an equation
products are the new substances formed when the chemical reaction rearranges the old substances (reactants), right
what is a word equation
simple discription of what is happenning in the reaction using the names of chemicals
what is a chemical reaction
a representation using formulas and symbols of a chemical reaction, they are unbalanced
What is a balanced equation
an equation that has the same number of atoms involved in the reactants side and the products side
why is it important to balance equations
to follow the law of conservation of matter by having the same number of each atom on either side of the equation to be scientifically accurate
what is an unbalanced equation
occurs when the number of each atom on eitehr side of the reaction is not equal. these reaction are not wrong just do not follow the law of conservation of matter
what are state symbols
they provide information on the physical state of reactants or products. they are placed in subscript behind the formula
what are the 4 state symbols
solid (s)
liquid (l)
gas (g)
solution (aq)
