Module 1.2 - Types of Chemical Reactions Flashcards

1
Q

What is an endothermic reaction and how does it effect its surroundings and do energy levels increase or decrease

A

reaction in which heat is absorbed causing surroundings to be cooler. because energy is absorbed there is more enrgy produced then what went in

2
Q

Explain three examples of endothermic reactions

A
boiling (energy needs to be put in to break liquid bonds into gas)
photosynthesis (heat energy is absorbed in from sun to feed plant)
icecube melting (heat energy absorbed to break solid bond into liquid)

Q

What is an exothermic reaction and how does it effect its surroundings and do energy levels increase or decrease

A

reaction in which heat is given off causing surrounding to become warmer . because energy is given out there is less energy produced then what went in

Q

Explain three examples of exothermic reactions

A

respiration (CO2 is warm energy given out from the body)
freezing (from liquid to solid energy is expelled making tighter bonds0
condensation (for gas to liquid energy needs to be given off for bonds to be made)

Q

What is combustion and what is needs for it to occur (exo or endo)

A

the process of burning something therefore exothermic (gives of heat)
oxygen and a type of fuel is needed for comubstion to occur so combustion is therefore a oxidation reaction

Q

explain a bushfire as an example of combustion

A

oxygen in air burns with plants/leaves/twigs releasing (exo) heat and light energy to surrounds

Q

What is complete combustion and what does it produce

A

when there is an abundance of oxygen that reacts with fuel producing carbon dioxide and water and energy

Q

What is an example and teh equation for complete combustion

A

bunsen burner blue is good because it means the air hole is open and ready to take in air
fuel + oxygen —-> Carbon dioxide + water

Q

What is incomplete combustion and what does it produce

A

when there is limited ammount of oxygen reacting with fuel, carbon monoxide, carbon and water are produced

Q

What is an example and teh equation for incomplete combustion

A

bunsen burner flame yellow is bad because airhole is semi closed
fuel + limited oxygen —–> carbon monoxide + carbon + water

Q

Explain how we are effecting the carbon cycle

A

the burning of fossil fuels (natural gas, oil, coal) produces co2. respiration gives of co2. fossil fuels are used for must electricty and makes c02. co2 is a greenhosue gas that traps heat in atmosphere (global warming) therefore co2 is warming up the world. if co2 levels are high o2 levels are low cauing incomplete combustion therefore creating carbon monoxide and carbon which are extremeley poisonous

Q

What is respiration, its formula, exo or endo why, where and when does it occur, how is it similar to combustion

A

the process the body uses to release carbon dioxide into the world. exo because chemical energy is being released. it occurs in the mitochondria cells of all lving thinsg 24/7.
it is like combustion because is creates CO2 and water but is controlled

glucose + oxygen —> carbon diosxide + water + energy

Q

What is photosynthesis, its formula, exo or endo why, where and when does it occur, what does it require to occur

A

process by which plants use energy from sunlight to produce glucose, carbon dioxide and water. endo because energy from sun is absorbed. occurs in cholorplasts of cell when sun is out. requires cholophyll (chemical that makes plants green)

carbon dioxide + water —> glucose + oxygen

Q

what is rusting + formula

A

iron is cheap but is weak to withstand rust. when irons and most types of steel react with air and water it forms rust
iron + oxygen —> iron (III)oxide
