purpose of emergency lighting?
.. Why do we have emergency lighting?
To allow the safe movement of people along escape routes towards and through the exits provided to a place of safety.
minimum LUX on escape routes?
1 Lux
older systems may be 0.2 Lux
when EM lighting is required within rooms ?
Rooms larger that 60 M2
rooms risked assessed as needing emergency lighting
not less than 0.5 Lux
Duration available?

180
Mins
Marking and cat of operation?
.. Operation
time required for most building and setting?
3 hours ( 180 mins)
emergency lighting requirements in design?
.. 1 Designed so that when power fails they operate
- 2 If failure of an individual normal light could risk safety, maintained luminaires should be used
- 3 Preferably two in each room so failure of an individual luminaire does not leave total darkness
- 4 At least 2m high.
- 5 Lots of low output luminaires is preferable to a few high powered luminaires
- 6.2 External luminaires on outside exit routes, street light may be OK
- 6.3 In lift cars.
4 On moving stairs & walkways

area Emergency lighting should be sighted?
Near = within 2 metres
near Emg Exits
Near stairs , so each flight receives direct light
change of level
Near to mandatory emergency exit signs and safety signs
at each change of direction.
at each intersection corridor
near to final exit outside of the building
near each first aid point
near to firefighting equipment
min requirement for premises that may not be immediately evacuated ?
i.e. sleeping accommodation
places of entertainment
or if the premise will be reoccupied before batteries are fully charged
3 hours
1 hour duration should be used only if the premises will be evacuated immediately upon supply failure and not re-occupied until full capacity has been restored.
when should a non maintained system be used?
..most cases
when should a maintained system be used?
.. Where normal lighting might be dimmed or turned off, a maintained or combined emergency escape lighting system should be installed
For some cinema and theatre auditoria where the recommended maintained illuminance is likely to effect the normal working, can be reduced to 0.02 lux.
