Formed by thin, moderately branching roots growing from the stem.
fibrous root systems
Main root of a primary root system, growing vertically downward.
taproot systems
Woody plants have stems that live for many years adding new growth each year.
Herbaceous plants have stems that die back to the ground each year.
Root cap
It is composed of dead, thick-walled cells and protects the root.
Meristematic region
The part just above the root cap, where undifferentiated cells carry out mitosis.
Elongation region
In this section, cells begin to differentiate into specific kinds of cells.
Maturation region
Cells become fully differentiated and root hairs are produced allowing it to absorb more water and nutrients.
