Module 12: Human Gait Flashcards
What is the definition of one complete gait cycle?
The landing of one foot to the landing of that same foot
What is the difference between a stride and a step?
A step is the landing of one foot, to the landing of the other foot, a stride is the landing of one foot to the the landing of that same foot
What are the 3 main characteristics of the swing phase?
Foot clearance, limb advancement, maintenance of forward momentum
3 characteristics of stance phase:
Stability, balance, propulsion
3 moments of the swing phase:
initial swing (acceleration), mid swing, terminal swing (deceleration)
5 moments of the stance phase:
initial contact (heel strike), load response, mid stance, terminal stance (heel off), pre swing (toe off)
When in the gait cycle is the hip in an extension?
terminal stance (heel off) & pre swing (toe off)
When in the gait cycle is the knee extended/neutral?
initial contact, midstance, terminal stance, terminal swing
What are the requirements for human gait to occur efficiently?
Progression, postural control, adaptation
At which point of the gait cycle does the COG move anteriorly to the stance limb?
Terminal Stance (heel off)
What are the main differences between running and walking in regards to the gait cycle phases?
Running has no double support phase but does have an air phase where no part of the leg is touching the ground
- heel strike is replaced by forefoot strike
What are the differences between walking backwards and forwards?
walking backwards has a decreased step length, increased hip extension and heel strike is replaced by toe strike
Why is walking upstairs harder than walking on flat ground?
Increased joint mvmt, increased muscular demand, increased balance necessary because of the vertical translation
When is the compression force between the femur and patella the largest when climbing stairs?
the point when the front leg is pushing up the stair
At what point in the gait cycle are we most unstable?
Midstance (only one limb is contacting the ground)
