Gravidity/Para
refers to the number of times a woman has been pregnant - the outcome is irrelevant; multiple babies count as 1

pregnant
Parity/Para
the # of times that woman has given birth to baby 24 week or more regardless of whether child was alive or dead
Hemoglobin
a red protein (iron based) that gives blood the red color that transports oxygen in the blood to tissues
Hematocrit
the measurement of the amount of RBC as related to total blood count
Pica
extreme craving usually non-nutritous substances like: coal, soap disinfectant, toothpaste, mothballs, ice. does not affect either maternal or fetal health
Multipara
woman who has had 2 or more pregnancies where baby lived
Nullipara - none
a woman who has NOT carried pregnancy to live birth
Primi - first
primipara- completed one pregnancy at 20 weeks
Multi - many
multipara-completed at least 2 or more at 20 weeks or greater
Nulli gravida
never pregnant
Primigravida
pregnant once or first pregnancy
multi-gravida
pregnant at least 2 times
Proteinuria
protein in urine usually albumin and can be transient or benign and indication of renal impairment
Glocosuria
happens when blood glucose is passed into urine (common in pregnancy)
Supine Hypotension
hypotensive syndrome; pressure of the gravid uterus compresses the vena cava reducing venous return. Cardiac output s reduced & BP falls & gives feelings of nausea & fainting
Chloasma
the mask of pregnancy - usually develops second half of pregnancy 50 to 70% of women & goes away after pregnancy
Grand multipara
woman who has given birth 5 times or more
