Generation
leads us top focus on three generations: grandparents, parents, grandchildren. Partner transitions in one generation reverberate across generations with varying affect, depending on the generation in which the transition occur. This reflects the life course principle of linked or interdependent lives so the experiences of one member are not confined either to that individual or to their immediate family circle ie/ divorce in generation two (parents) requires renegotiation involving child, parents, grandchildren, grandparents
Time
includes the age at which a transition occurs ( the life stage principle) and duration, the length of time either between transitions or spent in relationships created or affected by a given transition. Ie/ how parent divorce will affect someone while their very young or away at university or during midlife
Place
where were other families living at the time of transition in partner status. Where will children live following divorce?
Gray Divorce
Divorce among couples ages 50+ and is an increasingly common phenomenon
more prompted by women
Women with divorced parents report more ambivalence, conflict and negativity in their romantic relationships
