Module 10 Flashcards
Remote grandparents
not very involved, often because of geographical distance
Involved style grandparenting
small proportion and assumes parent-like responsibility, usually in response to a family crisis
Companionate or apportioned style
grandparents feel close to their grandchildren without taking on a parental role, is the most common
Influential grandparents
are highly involved with and emotionally close to their grandchildren, live nearby, have close ties with their children, knew at least one of their grandparents and are especially close to target grandchild
Supportive grandparents
exercise no authority or discipline over their grandchildren and have less contact than the influential type. They are younger, better off, usually on maternal side, especially close to the target grandchild, and are both emotionally close and in considerable conflict with their children about their grandchildren’s upbringing
Authority-Oriented grandparents
grandparents and their children exhibit even greater contrasts in combining the closest emotional ties and the most conflict and tension. Most authoritarian
Passive and detached grandparents
are not involved, but believe they have close ties with grandchildren and children
Passive grandfathers
have moderate levels of contact; involvement in generative activities (listening and teaching grandchild) and commitment to their grandchild
Involved grandfathers
high levels of contact, involvement and commitment
Disengaged grandfathers
low levels
