A set of IP subnets representing a physical location that is used by Active Directory to control replication.
Active Directory site
A feature in Windows 10 that speeds up access to files over slow connections by caching files. It operates in distributed cache mode or hosted cache mode.
BranchCache
Services or apps, such as Microsoft 365, Azure AD, or Microsoft Intune, that are available over the Internet.
cloud services
The Active Directory partition that holds general information about the Active Directory forest and application configuration information. It is replicated to all domain controllers in the Active Directory forest.
configuration partition
One or more identifiers included in a hardware device that is used by Windows 10 to locate and install an appropriate driver for a hardware device.
device identification string
An identifier included with a hardware device driver that describes how the device driver is to be installed.
device setup class
A server role in Windows Server that includes replication of shared folders and virtualization of paths providing access to the shared folders.
Distributed File System (DFS)
A logical grouping of computers and users in Active Directory.
domain
A server that holds a copy of Active Directory information.
domain controller
The Active Directory partition that holds domain-specific information, such as user and computer accounts, that is replicated only among domain controllers within the domain.
domain partition
Multiple Active Directory domains with automatic trust relationships among them.
forest
A domain controller that holds a subset of the information in all domain partitions for the entire Active Directory forest.
global catalog server
A feature integrated with Active Directory that can be used to centrally manage the configuration of Windows 2000 and newer Windows computers, including Windows 10.
Group Policy
A collection of Group Policy settings that can be applied to client computers.
Group Policy object (GPO)
Part of a Group Policy object that is typically used to configure the user environment. Preferences can be changed by the user but are reset again at next sign-in.
