Whether one chooses to board a horse, or want to house a horse on a property,
many of the same considerations exist. One may consider most of the following
factors in any case:

  • The local weather conditions in the area
  • Legal requirements including zoning limitations and building code issues
  • The terrain and topography of the site
  • Type of enclosed structures such as barns, stalls, etc.
  • Location of pastures and paddocks
  • Over-all operation whether a single horse or many horses
  • Driveways and access for trailers and other equipment
  • Fencing
  • Location of safe gated entries and exits
  • Storage of hay and bedding
  • Space for utility and tack areas
  • The horse’s temperament
  • The horse’s kind of work, show schedules, and daily routine
  • How much one can afford to spend
