Module 1 - Study of Life Flashcards
What is biology?
The study of life. Structures, functions, and interactions of living things.
What are the characteristics of life?
Made up of one or more cells
Displays organization
Grows and develops
Reproduces
Responds to stimuli
Requires energy
Maintains homeostasis
Adapts/evolves over time
What is the difference between growth and development?
Growth is the addition of mass to an organism
Development is a process of natural changes that occur during the life of organisms, different abilities
What is a cell?
The basic unit of life.
What is a species?
A group of organisms that can breed with one another and produce fertile offspring.
What is homeostasis?
The regulation of an organism’s internal conditions to maintain life.
What is science?
The use of evidence to form testable explanations and predictions of natural occurrence
What is a hypothesis?
A testable explanation of a situation
What is a scientific theory?
An explanation of a natural phenomenon supported by many observations and experiments over time.
What is a scientific law?
A description of patterns or relationships in nature does not attempt to explain anything.
What are inferences?
Combining observations with other sources to make a logical conclusion
What is peer review?
A process in which the procedures used during an experiment and the results are evaluated by scientists in the same field.
What are ethics?
A set of moral principles or values
What is the scientific method?
- Find problem or question to research
- Make observations
- Form a hypothesis to explain observations
- Carry out an experiment to test your hypothesis
- Analyze the results
- Form a conclusion, make a new hypothesis or keep the one you have and retest it.
Why are ethics important?
They protect the participants, the environment, and reduces bias in experiments.
