Sociology
is the study of social life, including all forms of interactions and relationships and it is what you become
- the disciplined study of human social behaviour, including the analysis of the origins, classifications, institutions and development of humans society
- refers to the structured social relations and institutions among a large group of people which cannot be reduced to a simple collection of individuals (v) -> society
Culture (v)
is the term sociologists use to describe ‘way of life’ including the practices and beliefs, of a particular group of people
cultural practices and beliefs (ex. religious parties, traditions like thanksgiving, language, sport and physical practices)
- is thought of as a common way of life, practices and beliefs that bind people together whereas society refers to the people who share these beliefs and practices
Sociology of Sport (v)
is a sub-discipline of sociology that examines the relationships between sport and society and position sport as a central part of social and cultural life
Power relations
constraints or enablement
Interpersonal/group power relations - shaping us all the time
- refers to the asymmetrical power relations between an individual or group (coach-athlete, parent-child)
- influences and shape choices not determining them
- people who you connect with
Structural power relations
- refers to power relations embedded within social structures in society (class, gender, race)
- our ideas of gender influence and shape the decisions we make
- people you do not neccassarily know
Ideology
learned through things like news, tv, social media, family, etc.
- it helps us understand the social world and our place in it
- is comprised of ideas that people use to give meaning to the world and make sense of their experience
- they serve the interests of dominant groups
Social construction (v)
phenomenon - to draw attention to social historical processes through which people collectively invent and reinvent their shared understandings of the social world (women in sport - idea that is socially constructed)
- they serve to empower some group while constraining others
Sport
any formally organized, competitive activity that involves vigorous physical exertion and execution of complex physical skills with rules enforced by a regulatory body
- sport is a social construction (changing overtime)
Inter-disciplinary
bringing together two or more disciplines (or areas to study) to examine a phenomenon
The sociological imagination
the sociological imagination is the ability to understand the circumstances of individuals or groups in relation to broader historical, social and cultural factors
three sensitives - historical, comparative and critical sensitivity
Historical sensitivity
understanding how personal experience in sport connects to broader history
Comparative sensitivity
learning how sporting beliefs and practices shift across diverse cultural contexts
Critical sensitivity
ability to apply our critical abilities to make sport better
Physical culture
how the physical body is embedded in and shaped by certain aspects that are part of day-to-day life in groups and societies
- is the term that is sometimes used to describe movement, it includes sports and exercise, but it also encompasses all movement involving physical activity, including for example, walking, dancing, working etc.
Agency (t)
the ability of individuals and groups to act independently in goal-directed manner to shape society
Democratization (t)
the process of social change towards greater levels of social equality
