What are chemical restraints?
A drug is used to restrict the freedom or movement of a patient or in some cases to sedate a patient
What are physical restraints?
Any method used with intent to restrict freedom of movement or to control the behavior of an individual
What are the risks of physical restraints?
- Pressure ulcers, skin trauma
- Decreased muscle mass, strength
- Physical discomfort, increased pain
- Obstructed and restricted circulation

- Initial and ongoing assessments regarding need for restraint and alternative attempts
- Communications with physician and patient/family
- Description of restraint used
- Times of restraint application and removal
- Assessments, e.g., comfort, skin condition
- Effectiveness of restraint
- Assessment of need for continuing restraint
